The Philadelphia Eagles were founded in 1933 as an expansion team to the NFL. The Eagles get off to a slow start during their first decade in existence. They suffered through numerous losing seasons, and in 1943, the team was forced to merge with the Pittsburgh Steelers due to shortage in manpower as a result of World War II. This merged entity were known as the "Phil-Pitt Steagles". This merger was never intended to be permanent, and was dissolved at the end of the 1943 season. The later part of the 1940s, however, was an entirely different story for the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles made it to the NFL Championship game in three straight seasons and won the title in 1948 and 1949. These two Championship victories mark the Eagles as the only NFL team ever to win back-to-back Championships by shutouts, defeating the Chicago Cardinals 7-0 in 1948 and the Los Angeles Rams 14-0 in 1949. Since then, the Philadelphia Eagles have won only one other Championship in 1960, however, they have made it to the playoffs almost every year since the late 80s. They have played in the Super Bowl one time since them, losing to the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX. Despite their struggles, the Eagles are always a threat in the NFC East division and will undoubtedly continue to be one.
