The Cowboys came into existence as an expansion team in 1960 after much resistance from the Washington Redskins, who, until then, had held a monopoly on NFL teams representing any of the southern states. The Cowboys actually went as far as to buy the rights to the Redskins' fight song, forcing them to back down and allow the team to form their franchise in Dallas. Throughout the 60s and 70s, the Dallas Cowboys continued to grow their franchise and increase their popularity with the people of Dallas. In the early 1980s the Cowboys started to show some real promise as they made it to the NFC Championship game in three consecutive years between 1980 and 1982, however, they never made it to the super bowl. After a series of disappointing seasons throughout the remainder of the 1980s, the team was sold to Jerry Jones in 1989. Jones promptly turned the team around, first, by firing the current head coach and hiring Jimmie Johnson. His second great move was drafting quarterback Troy Aikman with the first pick in the draft. The Cowboys went on to dominate the 1990s, claiming the NFC East title in 5 strait seasons, and going on to win the Super Bowl in three of those seasons. The Dallas Cowboys' last Super Bowl title came in 1995 under head coach Barry Switzer. Since then, they have tapered off to become a mediocre team in recent years, however, Jerry Jones is still the owner of the team, and we have certainly seen what he is capable of.
